The Bridging Visa – Stay Secure While You Transition

The Bridging Visa

At Wings International, we understand that visa transitions can be complex. That’s why we provide full assistance with Bridging Visas—temporary visas that allow individuals to lawfully remain in Australia while their new visa application or immigration appeal is being assessed.

Bridging Visas are especially useful when your current visa has expired or is about to expire, and you require continued lawful stay in Australia. These visas help individuals regularise their immigration status and avoid unlawful presence, which could negatively impact future applications.

While a Bridging Visa does not offer the benefits of a full (or "substantive") visa, it plays a critical role in maintaining legal status and peace of mind during uncertain times. Whether you're awaiting a decision or planning a fresh application, this visa can offer much-needed stability.

Key Features of Bridging Visas

  • Lawful Stay Extension: Remain in Australia legally while your new visa is being processed.

  • Variety of Types: Bridging Visas are issued under labels A through F, with each offering different levels of benefits and flexibility.

  • Most Common – Bridging Visa A: Typically granted when an onshore application is lodged; allows lawful stay without work or travel rights (unless granted).

  • Bridging Visa B: Allows you to leave and return to Australia while your visa application is under review.

  • Important Note: You can usually move down the Bridging Visa hierarchy (e.g., A to B), but not up (e.g., C to B is not permitted).

  • Validity: Bridging Visas remain valid either until your application is finalised or until the date set on your visa grant letter.

  • Bridging Visa A (BVA)
This visa is typically granted to individuals who apply for a new visa while lawfully onshore and holding a substantive visa. It allows the applicant to remain in Australia while their new visa application is processed. However, BVA does not permit travel outside Australia. If international travel is required, you must apply for a Bridging Visa B.

  • Bridging Visa B (BVB)
This visa is designed for individuals who are already on a Bridging Visa A but need to travel temporarily overseas. It allows lawful return to Australia while your substantive visa application is still being processed.

  • Bridging Visa E (BVE)
BVE is generally issued to individuals who do not currently hold a valid visa and need to regularise their immigration status. It's important to note that conditions attached to a Bridging Visa E may affect future visa applications or your ability to return to Australia after departure.
